Part Time Believer
With social distancing occurring on a global scale, experiences of isolation and solitude are being widely felt. As an exploration of the distinctions and commonalities of these two emotions, my work merges traditional and modern symbols in an attempt to find balance. Furthermore, the title Part Time Believer, is influenced by the effects society and solitude have on the mental state and the fluctuation of emotions.
Both trapped and overflowing, the teapot stands at the center in a precarious combination of tangled wires and spouted words. As I was utilizing the pages in a mystery book, certain words or phrases exuding mixed tones echoed familiar thoughts concerning social distancing stood out. They now burst out of the spout in balled up clusters of thoughts. An outstretched hand reaches towards the pot, and holds similar marks along the fingers as the wire around the pot, or pencil marks around words. What can’t been seen immediately is a doll stuck inside of the pot, unknowing of the commotion outside, yet still reaching to escape its confinement.
