Artist Statement

Human connections and interactions with the Earth are the underlying concepts within my multidisciplinary studio practice.  Simulating natural materials allows me to slow down my process to carefully observe the details in nature, often resulting in hyperrealistic interpretations of the natural world. With neutral tones, organic forms, and naturalistic materials, I aspire to share the quiet presence of nature that invokes my constant curiosity. Through photography, painting, and sculpture my pieces often form simple transformations to heighten ecological awareness and result in small collections resembling museum displays.

As living beings, there is an undeniable connection to our terrains. This planet is more than just resources at our disposal but is owed respect and maintenance for a balanced existence. Initiating my process is an observational practice with mindful explorations of natural landscapes, leading to a methodical consideration of found elements that I preserve for later use in my work. These moments fit together like puzzle pieces but have no single solution. Arranging these pieces is like arranging views of reality. Both ephemeral and permanent, the Earth holds a mystery that I embrace in my work.  

Artist Bio

Claire Simpson is a multidisciplinary artist active in the Denver Arts Community. Her focus is in human connections with the Earth through simulated reality and employs a variety of mediums including painting, ceramics, photography, and video. She earned her BFA at Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design, and has been awarded a residency at Anderson Ranch. She has exhibited in group exhibitions at TAXI AIR, the Phillip J. Steele Gallery, and Frist Art Museum among other venues. Her work has also been featured with the Sierra Club environmental organization.
